Offering Children Orthodontics in Brandon & Tampa, FL
The American Association of Orthodontists advises that it is best for the orthodontist to see children by age 7 to advise if orthodontic treatment is appropriate. The first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by that time and crossbites, crowding and other problems can be evaluated. Early treatment may be beneficial to guide the growth of the jaw and guide incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, correct thumb-sucking, and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In other words, early treatment can simplify later treatment, as well as lead to a better final result. Conversely, inappropriate early treatment may result in longer and needlessly complex treatment, increased associated risks, as well as additional costs. Accordingly, early orthodontic treatment is not beneficial in many cases. The decision to treat early should be considered after a consultation with the parents, the orthodontist, and the patient.
